Sense & Sensibility

I’ve always thought that there’s something terribly wrong with the way human beings are evolving. Then came this forwarded email in my Inbox. Hm. Hmm. Hmmm….

Subject: FW: Obituary - The Passing away of Mr Common Sense

Today, we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn’t always fair; and Maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6 -year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get
parental consent to administer Tylenol, sun lotion or a band-aid to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue
you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in herlap, and was promptly awarded a huge set tlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents , Truth and Trust; hiswife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by his three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else IsTo Blame, and I’m A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Common sense is not dead. It is the misrepresentation of common sense that was buried 6 feet under. Nevertheless, he lives with us on quite a paradoxically parallel existence..It isnt for us to grieve the death/temporal loss of the old common sense. After all, as you’ve written, if he has truly died then it is apparently useless to have hope for the human race? The fact that we are still alive means that he is still here…

in this race againts time and space, we people, do thing that withstand our will or needs. actually we often forgot the word sense, the quality and the quantity of every gestures we made. Have we ever wonder why that dark side of the moon never tried to reveal itself?, or have we ever mourned the death of yesterdays dreams that been burried from the deepest of the past? this time let’s both try to do things right. our will never been right at all, because it’s His will be reign on this surface.

whew…very nice article…but I still don’t think that common sense has died…it’s just that people tend to forget ‘em…

  13. awgushto Says:

i doubt common sense has died…he has always been with me, along with the very few people i know…not the successful ones, just those who knew how to actually live a life. the pointis that common sense might have died in most of us….some changed his name to diversity and simplicity….and some still believe he is…and so the thing is, there are dumb people, intelligent ones, and the ones who don’t give a thing about life…and Mr. Common Sense.

  14. Chubby Says:

I like article, good write up from the one who made it. I do agree with the author. So much has change … tsk! tsk! tsk!

  15. Marianne Says:

Why is it that some author feels the need to exaggerate to prove a point? Life could be so much simpler if we just go straight to the point.

  16. Leona Says:

to some it’s dead. but to some it’s still alive. it’s really a matter of discipline and values.

  17. net Says:

common sense never dies… it’s one of the most wonderful gift God has given us.As long as its Author (God)reigns, it will remain forver -just like Him.
…we may have taken it for granted, it’ll stay…waiting…even if the waiting seems…forever.

well,it’s hauman nature. In fact it is one of the greatest attributes that God has given to us but most of the time, we forget it to accomplish.we are governed by our own desires for us to fail doing what is the most sensible thing in our lives. Follow the desire of God for and certainly, it would be the most sensible thing that would happen in your entire life…..

  24. rogelio Says:

I could not believed common sense has gone for some of us for if it does, then this blogs of your’s show no comment at all. We all have sense but all in a new concept of life. Continue to publish parallel writings for it might give light to those who are not.

  25. yna Says:

    very alarming…
really what would happen if we completely lost our common sense??? Geee>>>>

  26. Jan Michael Says:

i heard he’s still alive! brought back from the dead by me! hahahaha. seriously, hes not completely gone. not all people have become idiotic and senseless with their actions and decisions. there are those who still try to think before they act and simply have a good common sense when it comes to life. there’s still a chance that common sense will wake up from his coma!

nice post, by the way. kicks some people on their sheens

Hello… a very nice article to read!
Common sense, do we use common sense whenever we meet such hard situations; or, do we use the so called COMMON SENSE just to escape from our own faults…?
It’s a question thats bothering me…cause i think if we use COMMON SENSE at the proper ways, proper time, and right place, without pointing fingers or finding faults to others, i’m sure, everything will be FINE… and the country itself will be FINE!

No…common sense is not gone…its everywhere, its all in people’s mind! They are being used by those uncontented poeple who wants to get EVEN with others, whose trying to be fair in the game of life. Those greedy people who keeps on using thier EARTHLY SENSE just to get want they want.Eventhough they will hurt someone’s family, relationship and worst…lives! Because if they used their HEART…they will value things that might destroy due to her greediness. My family is a victim of these kind of people and sufferring from it,up to this moment!!!! If only i could use the force of law…i will!!! but I love my FAMILY so much!!!! And i dont want them to worry…That’s why, i put the issues in its proper quorum! I am still hoping that our LAW will justice for my family!

well that is a nice eye opener. it makes me realize that the truth really hurts. but do you really believe that Common Sense is really gone? i mean do you really believe that there is nothing more that we can do about it. same thing with he’s so called family. TRUTH, TRUST, DISCRETION, RESPOSIBILITY and REASON. i have a son to raise. he’s still very young. and as a parent i believe that we should keep all of them alive. we should always teach them what’s the difference between truth and lies. the reason why we should trust others. the importance of responsibility. i guess we better start something new. to keep common sense and his family alive.
